How the food safety checker works

Our database contains every common food humans eat โ€” fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, grains, sweets, herbs, and prepared foods โ€” with a species-specific verdict for both dogs and cats. Each entry is sourced from the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, the Merck Veterinary Manual, and the American Kennel Club's canine health resources.

Verdict colors explained

  • Green (Safe): No known toxicity in normal serving sizes. Some foods are still better as occasional treats.
  • Yellow (Caution): Generally not toxic, but problematic โ€” choking risk, high fat, allergens, or only safe in tiny amounts.
  • Red (Dangerous): Known toxic to your pet. Call poison control immediately if your pet ate any.

Top foods pets should never eat

  • Cats: Onions/garlic, lilies (any part), chocolate, raw fish (long-term), dog food (long-term), milk, raw bread dough.
