Pet Vomiting: Causes, Foods That Trigger It & When to Call the Vet

Vomiting is the body's way of expelling something it can't handle. One-off vomiting after a known food trigger is usually fine; repeated vomiting needs vet attention.

Severity: moderate
If your pet vomits more than 2โ€“3 times in 12 hours, vomits blood, can't keep water down for 12+ hours, or shows other symptoms like lethargy, pale gums, or distended belly, contact your vet immediately.

Understanding vomiting

Vomiting in dogs and cats is one of the most common reasons for an urgent vet visit. The cause matters as much as the symptom โ€” bringing up food shortly after eating is different from green or bloody vomit, which signals more serious problems.

Home care

Withhold food for 8โ€“12 hours, then offer small amounts of water. Once water stays down, offer a bland diet (boiled chicken + rice for dogs; plain canned chicken for cats). Reintroduce normal food gradually over 2โ€“3 days.
